Often confused with being fake. Polite is being kind and respectful to others. It is based on the genuine desire to smooth relations with others, to treat them with respect, and to make them comfortable. Being polite does not necessarily mean that you're hiding something or holding back from how you really feel. Instead, it means that you are not so self centered that you only do something for your own interests (i.e being nice to get to know someones secrets). A desirable quality.
