Rumor has it this was a Scandanavian Seafarer's greeting. Often used in crowds to find other "port" residents, and interestingly, sometimes to calm uncomfortable violent situations among port residents. One group in possible conflict with another may yell "Yeat!" and if the other group responds in kind, the situation calms.
