"Straightedge" was a song by Minor Threat recorded in the early 80s. No drugs, no excessive drinkin, or casual sex. Being straight-edge is not following a set of rules, it is following an ideal. People who are straight-edge are not against drinking, they are against drinking excessively; alcohol is not poisonous in small quantities, nor do such small quantities alter your state of mind. The whole principle behind sXe, as it is referred to, is purity/clarity of body and mind.  To see where straight-edge came from, here are the lyrics to "Straightedge" written by Ian McKaye of Minor Threat in 1981.  "I'm a person just like you  But I've got better things to do  Than sit around and fuck my head  Hang out with the living dead  Snort white shit up my nose  Pass out at the shows  I don't even think about speed  That's something I just don't need   I've got the straight edge   I'm a person just like you  But I've got better things to do  Than sit around and smoke dope  'Cause I know I can cope  Laugh at the thought of eating ludes  Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue  Always gonna keep in touch  Never want to use a crutch   I've got the straight edge"  As you can see, sXe is not against drinking; it's against getting messed up.  More recently, some who are sXe are also against eating processed foods which can also poison the body, or against eating meat. Most straight-edge people also refrain from casual sex, as they beleive that too is a form of mind-poison.  Also, while being straight-edge doesnt mean you CAN'T drink, most of those who are sXe do not.
