Gerard Way is a musician and comic book writer. He is the lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance and author of the Eisner Award-winning comic book The Umbrella Academy He was born on April 9, 1977 in New Jersey. He has a younger brother, Mikey Way, who plays bass in the band. Way attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999. While in New York in 2001, Way witnessed the September 11 attacks, inspiring him to change his life. In a magazine interview he stated: "I literally said to myself, 'Fuck art. I’ve gotta get out of the basement. I’ve gotta see the world. I’ve gotta make a difference.'" Soon after he witnessed the attacks, My Chemical Romance was formed. Gerard has battled alcoholisim, depression, and drug use, but has been sober since August 11, 2004. On September 3, 2007 he married Lindsey (Lyn-Z) Ballato, the bassist for the band Mindless Self Indulgence, backstage on the final date of the Projekt Revolution tour.
