When the medium of electrical transfer takes a shorter path back to the power source (cell or batteries) thus shortening the circuit, and leaving out the resistor (motor, lightbulb, buzzer etc.). Short circuiting will drain the power source at a phenomenal rate, and is best avoided. The most commonly used method of prevention against this is the (see my definition of) fuse
