A word used in the essay "The American Crisis" by Thomas Paine in winter 1776 during the uncertain times of the American revolution. The word Sunshine Patriot refers to individuals who claim to fight against tyranny on the side of freedom, yet are unable to stick it out when the going gets tough or unfavorable. These individuals will "shrink from the service of their country" when conditions are bad or uncomfortable for them. It is a term meant to shame those who are false-patriots who claim to be patriots, but will not give 100% effort when their moment of truth arrives.
