Giving a great deal of thought to something, whether it be something quite insignificant, or a life-altering choice that has to be made. Often accompanied by a vacant stare into the room. Sitting on salt may have two fall-outs. 1) You may find a positive conclusion and end up "using the salt" for something useful, 2) You may come to a negative conclusion and end up throwing salt in your own wounds.
