Locations such as Dubai, Las Vegas, Dellis Cay etc, developed in late modernity as temples to conspicuous consumption. They exist for the pursuit of fleeting pleasures and the theatrical squandering of resources; their unsustainability appears a badge of pride (enjoy your man-made 'Island World' when the sea rises you dumb f*cks). 'Masturscapes' describes such places, which amount to little more than celebratory wanks over the rapidly decaying corpse of high-carbon human civilisation. Suggested replacement for the social science term "places of excess".
