Be aware that listening to Metal doesn't make you a Metalhead, just like listening to punk rock doesn't make you a punk, and listening to rap doesn't make you a gangsta.

A Metalhead is a person who has long hair, wears black band T-shrits and blue denim or khaki pants. For male Metalheads, it is also acceptable to be shaven bald, though long hair is preferable. For female Metalheads, known as Metal Chicks, denim or khaki skirts are acceptable. Steel-toed boots are preferable. Other accessories that are sometimes used are spiked wristbands or gauntlets, leather jackets, and denim jackets.

The current generation of Metalheads take precedence over the Metalhead cultural guidelines and therefore decide what renders one as a poser. Common misconceptions about Metalheads is that they're gothic, or that they listen to Metalcore and Nu-Metal. Most Metalcore and Deathcore bands, including As I Lay Dying, Atreyu, Bullet for my Valentine, Bring Me the Horizon etc. are not acceptable in Metal Culture. Nu-Metal is not accepted as a legitimate form of Metal. Nu-Metal bands include Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Disturbed, etc. And last of all, Gothic Metal bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, His Infernal Majesty, etc. are despised in Metal culture.

Items that render one as a poser in Metal include hair dye, any haircut that a conformist might have, brightly colored T-shirts. Eyeliner and nail polish are acceptable for Metal Chicks to wear as long as it doesn't look too Gothic.
