An emergency thoracotomy performed on a patient on a hospital floor, as opposed to in the trauma bay. Performed almost exclusively at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York. The procedure has essentially no indication, except perhaps the case where an admitted patient gets shot on the wards, which may in fact happen at Jamaica. An optional technique is to enlist the patient's roommate as first assistant.
