French for a wild card. Hence it may be used in any circumstance or situation one might find himself/herself in. A wild card is a phrase that can be used in place of any noun, verb, pronoun, and/or adjective. (Excluding adverbs) Derived from French dialect in the mid 1699's as a naval code word to express a feeling of doubt or horror. It has since taken on a different form of meaning in today's society.
