To freely distribute knowledge/works that may or may not be protected by copyright law through file sharing software. In the past 50 years, the process of "napsterization" has been applied to all sorts of intellectual property distribution, from bootleg cassette tapes to digital files like mp3s and movies. There is even some concern presently about how the process will affect written work. The term stems from a program written by Shawn Fanning in 1998 called Napster, a popular P2P program.
