An emoticon that can be used in written form to pacify any offensive content that directly preceded it. Once a safety wink has been used, it is impermissible to take offence at anything in the sentence it follows. Similar to a wink, which is used in the written form to give tone to a phrase and indicate that what was written should be taken with a pinch of salt, the safety wink is reserved for occasions where there is a strong possibility of the sentence being perceived as highly inflammatory.
