Originally a measurement, and the term comes from the amount of barley offered as part of a daily offering over a period of 49 days. Now the period between the first day of Passover and Shavuot, which comprises of 7 weeks. During these weeks each day is counted, and from the 7th day onward, the number of weeks and days is also counted.
