Anime is the japanese word for animation. in the west it usually refers to the japanese way of animating, (often with large eyes, sweat drops for embarrasment etc, but not always) there are genres within anime, just the same as any other entertainment type. it is often heavily edited and 'dumbed down' when dubbed by america, as it is assumed americans will not understand. the subbed versions are pretty much a straight translation, so it is better if you want the original storyline.
