The somewhat phonetic spelling of some Americans' attempts to properly pronounce the name of the breed of dog dachshund meaning "badger dog" in German. One pronounces dashound like so: DASH-HOUND. In fact the proper German pronunciation of the dog breed is DOX-HOOND, and the preferred American pronunciation is DOX-UND. Of course, this pronunciation argument is in actuality relatively insignificant as in Germany these dogs are most often referred to as teckels and dackels anyway. One finds that the terminology wiener dog or doxie is more easily understood than dashound to the typical American you meet on the street. That is unless you prefer to use the true name of this dog's breed as listed above: dachshund.
