The River Thames, the river that runs through London, capital of the UK, and the main city of England, Great Britain and the British Isles. This is a nautical or marine term, dating back many centuries, to the time when London was (one of) the main ports of England - see also Bristol - and many cargo ships berthed there. Still in use in the 1980's, and probably beyond.
