Short for CROSS-over Utility Vehicle. Dating back to the early 1950's, they are automobiles with a sport utility vehicle appearance but is built upon a more economical and fuel-efficient unibody construction. Cars such as the Moskvitch 410 and AMC Eagle, are classic designs of early cross-overs. The crossover design has become a new trend in the automotive industry that some say was revived from Japanese makes, such as the Nissan Murano. Mainly built for the new age of "MPG" and emissions, they are simply platform economy cars with a larger, more reinforced body and engine.
