Tragi-comic character devised, developed and ultimately killed by the students of Leicester University. In an effort to increase the character's appeal, the original creator attempted to re-name him 'Beckingham Steve'in 1997. This was universally rejected by the fan base, serving only to reinforce the original moniker and cement Gay Steve's cult hero status.
