Noun: A deaf person; a person who is hard of hearing. Originates from the northern English county of Lancashire and in particular Blackburn during the industrial revolution. Blackburn was home to many cotton mills (weaving and spinning)- commonly very noisy places that caused deafness due to the noise and a buildup of cotton dust in the ear.
