Political party in the United States originally formed in 1854 to champion the rights of slaves, promote higher education and modernize the United States. Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican president in 1860. Modern Republicans typically support a strong military but a small government, the right to own a firearm, equality for taxpayers and freedom of religious expression. Modern Republican icons are President George Bush, Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh.
