A specific branch of warp mechanics based on Miguel Alcubierre’s 1994 metric, which describes a spacetime “bubble” that contracts space in front of a vessel and expands it behind. Alcubierrian warp mechanics studies the properties of such bubbles: the required negative energy density, the horizon problem (no communication between inside and outside), the accumulation of Hawking radiation, and the feasibility of creating and controlling the bubble. It remains the most famous and most studied mathematical model for faster‑than‑light travel that respects general relativity (though it still requires exotic matter).
