The branch of thermodynamics that studies systems far from equilibrium—systems where linear approximations fail, where fluxes are not proportional to forces, where order can emerge from disorder, where entropy production is not minimized but can fluctuate dramatically. Nonlinear thermodynamics is the foundation for understanding life, which persists far from equilibrium; for ecological systems that cycle through stable and unstable states; for economies that boom and crash; for climate systems that can suddenly flip.
