A formalized approach to the above, often using frameworks like Integrated Information Theory (IIT) to theoretically measure the level of consciousness (Φ or "phi") in any dynamic system. It's the attempt to create a calculus of sentience that could, in principle, assign a "consciousness value" to a computer network, a city, or a termite mound based on the complexity of causal interactions within the system.
