A pungent, acrid odor produced by oxidized human urine, commonly encountered in urban laneways, alleys, and neglected public spaces. The scent is often compared to that of feline urine, characterized by sharp ammonia notes intensified through prolonged exposure to air and environmental surfaces. Derived from the Greek κατούρημα (katoúrima), meaning “urine” or “act of urination,” later adapted into modern English vernacular.
