Ethylene is a plant hormone that helps ripen fruits, but if there is too much of it present in the air, it can cause fruit to go off. It is non-toxic in normal environments and has a sweet odour. Its modern name is "ethene" (not "ethane"). It is also used in the synthesis of antifreeze. Professionals convert the ethylene into ethylene oxide, then they further convert the ethylene oxide into ethylene glycol.
