Definition: A behavioral pattern in which an individual moves, thinks, or acts in contradiction to their claimed values, desires, or identity — knowingly or unknowingly — often resulting in self-sabotage, confusion in others, or emotional dissonance. Origin: Coined in the 21st century to describe the cultural, psychological, and relational phenomenon of presenting one way while living another. Often rooted in fear, trauma, performance culture, or unprocessed shame.
