Longhouses were large houses where the people lived communally. It's associated with a pervasive atmosphere of social domination controlled by the old and sclerotic matriarchs who dominated and squashed any masculine spirit to overcome challenges and go beyond the normal state of things. It is at once a vision of a future which has returned to squalor, and of a society which deepens its social surveillance system specifically under the rule of screeching harridans (or ‘mammies’) with no sexual appeal.
