Definition: A uniquely Austrian slang term used to describe someone who acts slow, confused, or spaced out — like they’re “smoked” but without actually smoking anything. It’s like their brain is “smoked by air” (Luft = air, g’selcht = smoked). Basically, you’re mentally foggy, distracted, or just plain slow — but sober. Origin: From the Austrian dialect g’selcht meaning “smoked” (like smoked meat). The term “luftg’selcht” jokingly refers to someone who behaves as if they were smoked (high or dazed), but only by air — no substances involved. Inspired by the “Luftg’selchter Pfarrer von St. Thomas am Blasenstein,” a famous mummy in Upper Austria.
