Chemdere (ケムデレ) Pronounced Kemudere is a Japanese slang term colloquially used when referring to a character that has a harsh rejecting personality, often going to extreme lengths to hide their intense feelings of love or admiration towards an individual. In Japanese ケム "Chem" or "Kemu" means "Smoke" and デレ "Dere" means "To be lovestruck" So this can be interpreted as "To mask ones true love behind an illusion of smoke and mirrors" A Character with the Chemdere personality trait will intentionally act distant to hide their true feelings, this is often done due to embarrassment or protecting ones status and image. Characters that are Chemdere often go as far as faking romantic interest in another person to hide their borderline obsessive feelings towards their true love.
