a bad pitcher in baseball. earl is specifically used to refer to a pitcher opposing the university of florida at their home ballpark, especially when heckling. the tradition of earl was started in the 90s when an opposing baseball team replaced a bad pitcher named earl with an equally bad pitcher. this lead a student to call him earl well. the nickname stuck and a tradition was born at the university of florida. earl is also used in other sports occasionally around the university.
