Imagine making a big fuss about a pair of pronouns. It's a gender-neutral reference to the third-person singular, and that's all there is to it. Some people may say "his/her" instead of "their" as that's what they're used to, just like how some people may choose to say "buy" instead of "purchase". And that's A-okay. And to be fair, this is mostly used in more formal speech or text, such as an essay or a legislative document. Obviously you're not gonna say this in casual dialogue (again, no problems if you choose to do so).
