Mulignan was only used for eggplant in my Italian family. My grandparents immigrated from a small village outside of Benevento which is outside of Naples. My mom’s cousins in Italy laugh at my mom because nobody says Muignan for eggplant anymore. In the United States, my Italian grandpa never called African Americans mulignan. My mom had never heard of that use. Grandpa referred to them as La Nera, The Blacks.
