emo is an abbreviation not for the word 'emotional' but 'emotive'. Emotive music is a sub-genre of rock popular among middle class teenagers with emotional difficulties. Normally the vocalist does not in fact sing, he/she whines instead. A lot of emo fans do in fact like other rock sub-genres, however these do not directly address their emotional difficulties. Being an emo fan is a bit like going to an alcoholics anonymous class-you just go to a gig, cry/worry etc, find another person in the same boat, tell them everything will be alright, they tell you everything will work out fine, you get reassured then you stop crying/worrying and the gig ends. The names of emo bands more often than not say it all.
