1) A Ukrainian city of just around 1 million people that is the capital of Donetsk Oblast. This city is a hub for the east of Ukraine, specifically the Donbas region. The city is famous for the soccer/football team Shakhtar Donetsk and their home stadium, Donbas Arena. Since 2014, Russia has terrorized and occupied the city as part of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, and the city was severely damaged. Most notably, the Russian army destroyed the renovated Donetsk Airport built in 2012. However, even under occupation, Donetsk is an undeniably Ukrainian city. 2) An oblast of Ukraine located in the east of the country. Large cities include Donetsk, Mariupol, Makiivka, Horlivka, and Kramatorsk. 3) Short for Shakhtar Donetsk, one of the two dominant teams of Ukrainian football.
