When you use fictional traumatic experiences and/or recreations in order to manipulate other‘s emotions, including „based on a true story“ versions, to invoke a large (or when real events are being exaggerated, larger) emotional response from the viewer. Although common on social media, traumabaiting takes place throughout society. From Fake GoFundMe‘s to Hollywood movies, Traumabaiting is all around us. Basically, if the aim is to leave the viewer in tears with the aim of profiting off of them in some way and you are not accurately representing the true facts, it’s traumabait.
