A “fauxverdose” occurs when someone sees fentanyl, panics, and faints. Symptoms often include rapid breathing, heart palpitations, and dilated pupils—none of which is consistent with opioid toxicity. Fauxverdoses involving police are regularly misreported in the media as actual opiate overdoses. This leads the public to misunderstand the very real dangers posed by fentanyl and its analogs. Fauxverdose is a portmanteau word derived from “faux,” meaning “not real or genuine” and “overdose.”
