1. The fourth planet from the Sun, it's often called the Red Planet because of the planet's red, blood-like, color. Its day is similar to Earth's, about 24 hours, and orbits the Sun once every 687 days. Mars is named after the Roman god of war, the equivalent of Ares. 2. The Roman god of war, the same god as the Greek god of war, Ares. Blood is often associated with Mars/Ares, which is how the Red Planet got its name.
