Acronym for 'Self Propelled Anti Aircraft' referring to vehicles designed specifically to combat enemy aircraft. These vehicles are usually lightly armored and is equipped with one or more rapid firing guns. SPAAs found their use during the second world war when air superiority could not be achieved, now the role of SPAAs shifted to defending against helicopters or slow, low flying aircraft. A few example of SPAAs includes the German Wirbelwind, Ostwind, Gepard, the less known Skink, M16 MGMC, and the M163 VADS.
