The tendency that a group of people walking together has to spread sidewise so that they occupy all of the limited space available, making it difficult for someone in a hurry behind them to pass them. This can happen for example on the pavement, in a hallway or on a platform. People in the group are usually not aware that they are groupspreading and will automatically spread sidewise as soon as the space becomes wider, requiring from the fast walker behind them to carefully plan their passing manoeuvre.
