a long patch of rainbow in the sky, but not a full rainbow. It is the subject of Hugh Mac Diarmid's poem "The Watergaw": "a watergaw wi' its chitterin' kucht ayont the on-ding". The word "iridule" is similar and refers to a small rainbow-colored patch of sky.
