A scenester is an individual who wants to accumulate social status, and who tries to obtain said status, by superficially imitating the authentic or intrinsically motivated followers of a given subculture or cultural phenomenon which they perceive to be currently popular, without understanding (and in many cases, not caring about understanding) the genuine anthropological or ideological context of the movement in question. The arrival of these people within a given scene, can very often cause a destructive feedback loop for the scene in question, because as it becomes more popular, and more people who don't really care about it try and use it as a source of social currency, the likelyhood increases that corporations will show up and start using it as a source of actual currency.
