A subgenre of "respectable" horror movies which began in the late 2010s. They typically carry a social or moral message and are gloomy, gory, pretentious, and aimed at an audience more interested in queer/feminist subtext than scares and fun. Expect boilerplate Tumblr politics, graphic violence but no female nudity, and laudatory reviews describing them as "slow burns", "giallo homages", or "bonkers". Examples: Get Out, Us, The Babadook, Hereditary, Midsommar, It Comes At Night, Suspiria 2018, Candyman 2021, The Lighthouse, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Saint Maud, Possessor, Last Night in Soho, Titane, Midnight Mass, ect.
