Used to reference an open and personal interpretation of God/Deity/Nature or any power greater than one's self. The idea that there are determinants and conditions to life beyond self-control or human-control is a spiritual challenge that can be defeating or liberating. Attributing negative/positive determinants/conditions to something greater than one-self is thought to be liberating and alleviating. Hence, ideas of a Higher Power have formed the basis of all spiritual practices and religions. The term HP detaches itself from preconceived notions and religious elements. God for example, is mistakenly associated with Christianity on an exclusive basis, this is not a necessary association. Hence HP unambiguously removes this association.
