1. King of Ancient Mycenae (City-State in Southern Greek Peninsula) during the Trojan War. Right after he came home from that war, his wife, Clytaemnestra, and his cousin, Aegisthus, conspired against and killed him. (In many accounts, Clytaemnestra stabbed him in a bathtub.) After this, Agamemnon's son, Orestes, killed his mother and Aegisthus as retribution. Agamemnon's homecoming is a major theme in Homer's Odyssey.
