A phrase that references the general lack of incentive/respect that is provided by society for virtuous behavior, instead being reserved for those demonstrating more superficial qualities. In the material sense, this is all too often true in that the price of success is forgoing one's integrity to satisfy a culture based largely on insincerity and self interest. Philosophically, the benefit of this lifestyle is debatable.
