The name téphani was popularized by the French as a feminine form of the name tephen which is derived from the Greek word “tephanos” meaning 'garland crown. ' tephen is found in the Bible as the first Christian martyr and as such, the first disciple of Jesus to receive the martyr's crown (or crown of glory).
