The current equivalent of a “tomboy,” (which is a more outdated way to refer to a tough girl.) Tomboy is a term that was most used and liked by trans guys and some nonbinary people, because the label “boy” in tomboy felt very affirming, and might still be used by closeted trans people today. However, those who actually consider themselves girls today, may find the label “tomboy” to be insinuating that they’re toughness is a boy trait, which detracts from the fact that women can be strong. So maybe prefer to switch to the term tomgirl.
