As a native Spanish and fluent French speaker, I can say that the previous definitions are either definitely wrong, or are private jokes. Puta means whore in Spanish. The equivalent word in French is Pute or Putain, not Puta. The origin of both the French and Spanish words is Putida, which refers to a stinky woman in Latin. In other Latin-derived languages you find Puta in Portuguese, and Putana in Italian.
