a word used by antis and gatekeepers in fandom in relation to characters or pairings/ships that they personally do not like. often used as an excuse to attack and gaslight shippers and fans who do like the character/ship. sometimes the excuse for calling a fictional thing "problematic" is that it's abusive, incestuous, or has a large age gap. or one of them is a villain. or two characters are enemies (or they used to be). or or none of these at all. the excuses are numerous, and many of them unfounded assertions.
